This rescue dog in America hugs stuffed toys after losing her litter of puppies

A grieving dog has thrown her affections on three stuffed animals after all of her puppies died at birth.

Twinkle gave birth to three pups in Whittier, California, last week but became depressed when each of them died.

Her owners, who rescued her from Mexico three months ago without realizing she was pregnant, bought her three stuffed animals to try to cheer her up.

She now treats the toys as if they were her own, her 18-year-old owner Xavier Hernandez said.

‘So my dog was pregnant and she lost all 3 of her puppies so my mom bought her these toys and she thinks they’re her puppies…breaks my heart,’ he wrote on Twitter last week, sharing two photographs of Twinkle with the toys.

The tweet swept the internet, sparking the sympathies of scores of other social media users.

Xavier later told Buzz Feed Twinkle would not allow him or his mother to touch the toys and was taking them everywhere with her.

Twinkle's owners say she now refuses to go anywhere without the stuffed animals and will not let either of them touch them

‘She didn’t do anything without them and wouldn’t let anyone touch them,’ he said.

After being inundated with messages asking after Twinkle on Twitter, he shared an update on Sunday.

‘Twinkle is feeling better. Just wanted to keep you guys updated and to also say thank all of you for your support and care, means the world.’

He is now raising money to treat the puppy to a day out or to give her a ‘companion.’
